Why We Love it

In the 1960s, Heuer was THE chronograph brand, its Carrera, Autavia, Camaro and Monza wrist timers seen on the wrists of race car drivers and well-heeled enthusiasts alike.

But being the leading brand, they were more expensive than a lot of armchair racers could afford. This gave rise to a series of incredible competitors in the chronograph space, those chronographs that resembled Heuers and, in some cases, were even made by Heuer under contract for other brands. Many of those brands had names lost to history—Clebar, Aristo and Tradition—while others lived on to the present day in one form or another. We've been working hard for the past few years to source and present the best examples of these stunning and budget-conscious timepieces, and the one we have for you is no exception: an original "Reverse Panda" dial Hamilton!

Outwardly, this chronograph is packed full of perfect details for vintage chronographs; a trim 36mm steel case with sharp, flat lugs, barrel pushers, and matte inverse panda dial. Of particular delight, this particular example features a signed case back and even retains its original signed crown - a definite rarity!

Internally, this piece features a robust Valjoux 7730 manual winding chronograph movement, otherwise known as a Hamilton Calibre 643 for this piece, a workhorse unit used widely by Heuer in the 60s and 70s. With values on early Carreras reaching new heights as of late, the value proposition for these exceptional alternatives continues to gain strength.  But aside from all of that - aside from the connection to Heuer, the motorsports pedigree, and the ever-increasing value of vintage sporting chronographs, this is an outright stunning timepiece with an excellent movement, one you can wear with pride and appreciation for mechanical watchmaking at its best.

Brand Story

+
Hamilton is an inseparable strand of the tapestry of American horological history.

The brand is perhaps best known to modern collectors for their historically significant tool watches: robust field watches issued to the U.S. military from the Vietnam War to the 1980s, bulky precision chronographs, or divers in EPSA SuperCompressor cases.

But during the Golden Age of American watchmaking, Hamilton was master of all trades, from railroad timers to dress watches fit for kings. Their catalogs from the 1930s and 1940s were filled with elegant and innovative pieces that have all but faded to obscurity. A casual glance at these Art Deco masterpieces gives the picture of a company whose mass-production methods belied its heightened sense of style and design.

During WWII, Hamilton completely converted its production to accommodate Department of Defense contracts, supplying marine chronometers, wristwatches and more to the American armed forces. So prolific and important was this output that the firm was awarded the Army-Navy “E” Award for excellence in manufacturing in 1943. Its place in the annals of exploration and flight is no less storied or important, having provided timepieces to numerous expeditions over the years.

Today, Hamilton is part of the Swatch Group, a large Swiss conglomerate of brands such as Tissot, Certina and Omega. Though the firm is no longer American-owned, it continues to produce modern versions of some of its most classic and enduring designs.
