Why We Love it

MB&F (Maximilian Büsser & Friends) is without question one of the most creative outfits in the contemporary boutique watchmaking space.

Founded by industry veteran watchmaker Max Büsser in 2005, the brand is built upon collaborating with leading horological designers, watchmakers, visionaries and brands such as Massena LAB, L’Épée, Alain Silberstein, H. Moser, Black Badger, and more. Their timepieces — and we specify ‘timepieces,’ as MB&F makes much more than just wristwatches — are some of the most innovative, daring, and properly unique products in modern horology, known for their use of alternative time-telling systems, unique materials, and interesting complications.

Take for example the Legacy Machine No. 2, or LM2 for short. The LM2 debuted in 2013 and was distinguishable by its three-dimensional architecture and its two Legacy-style flying balance wheels. Hard to believe it has been over a decade since its release, but this wildly creative display of mechanical ingenuity still resonates throughout all horological circles.

This particular LM2 features a 44.5mm 18k rose gold case with satin-finishing and subtle polished accents along its case and lug edges. With a signed crown positioned at two o’clock, this LM2 case is as close to ‘traditional’ watch case aesthetics as you’ll find in an MB&F timepiece - but when it comes to the dial and crystal, that’s an altogether different story.

Rising above the LM2’s case is an expansive domed sapphire crystal that provides a panoramic view of its expansive sunburst display. The dial is intricate and beautifully balanced despite the many moving components that reside front and center. The dial is supported on a double-arc mirror-polished bridge and features a white lacquered sub dial at 12 o’clock that houses a set of ‘Roman’ indices, the ‘MB&F’ signature and a matching blued-steel handset, a raised planetary differential at 6 o’clock, flanked by two mesmerizing floating balance wheels

The sapphire exhibition caseback gives us a view into its 231-component manual-winding engine created in tandem between two horological masterminds — Jean-Francois Mojon at Chronode and Kari Voutilanen. Immaculate Geneva waves, gold chatons, mirror-polished bevels and bridges designed with deliberate internal beveled angles — this movement is a masterclass in superlative hand-finishing.

Fitted with a signed alligator leather strap with monochrome stitching and a signed 18k rose gold pin buckle, this high-horology masterpiece is in outstanding condition throughout, showing only the faintest signs of wear from careful handling. Accompanied by its complete set including inner and outer boxes, papers and a custom presentation box to show off this 'M.A.D.' scientist creation, this piece offers a truly unique experience in the high end independent space.

Strap this baby on and you’ll be sure to turn some heads at your next collector GTG!

Brand Story

+
Swiss watch industry veteran, businessman, and entrepreneur Maximilian Büsser founded his eponymous brand MB&F (“Maximilian Büsser & Friends”) in 2005 following accomplished stints at Harry Winston and Jaeger-LeCoultre. A horological laboratory of sorts, MB&F is unlike traditional watchmaking enterprises, bringing together innovators from across the industry to collaborate on “Horological Machines” and “Legacy Machines” — timekeeping devices and wristwatches that push the creative and engineering envelopes in completely new directions.

A relatively small and nimble company, MB&F crafts kinetic sculptures in partnership with some of the most learned minds in watchmaking, including Stephen McDonnell, Kari Voutilainen, L’Epée, and others, the results of which are breathtaking. Certain of these works are displayed in the company’s “M.A.D. Galleries” (“mechanical art devices”) around the world, allowing buyers, potential customers, and others to view the firm’s groundbreaking horological art in a nontraditional setting.

MB&F and its creations have been awarded by the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève — the “Oscars” of the watch world — in recognition of the firm’s creativity, spirit, and watchmaking accomplishment. Truly, there are few companies operating today whose wares can be considered as thought-provoking and innovative as those of Maximilian Büsser & Friends.
