Why We Love it

A perpetual calendar is like a small computer on your wrist.

Think of it this way: Imagine a watch that keeps track of not only the time, but also the date, the day of the week, and the month, tells you whether it’s a leap year or not, and what the current phase of the moon is. Oh, and one more thing — imagine it does all of this mechanically, using springs and gears, and that you only have to adjust it once every century or so. Crazy, right?

Patek Philippe has been making such watches since the Second World War, and continues to make some of the most superlative quantieme perpetuelles on the market. This particular example, a Reference 5327J-001, is a recently discontinued contemporary model in yellow gold that displays its grand complication in a decidedly understated fashion — 1000% our vibe.

Housed in a 39mm 18K yellow gold case with a signed crown, sapphire crystal, and a stepped bezel, this elegant 5327 features an ivory-toned, lacquered, enamel dial with applied Breguet indices; a matching gold feuille handset; and a trio of subsidiary registers displaying day, date and month, leap year and moonphase indicator. Oh, and it can also tell the time too!

Powered by the self-winding Patek Philippe Calibre 240 Q movement — visible by way of a sapphire exhibition caseback — it comes outfitted with a signed brown alligator leather strap with a signed, 18K yellow gold deployant buckle. Further, this piece is accompanied by a signed leather folio, papers, pin pusher tool, solid 18K yellow gold caseback, Certificate of Origin dated November, 2017, outer box and an inner winding box!

Why Patek Philippe chose to discontinue this configuration in yellow gold is beyond us! The case material and dial layout is a wonderfully traditional configuration which calls back to numerous models in their historical catalog, and the inclusion of applied Breguet indices are a feast for any vintage enthusiast's eyes.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
