Why We Love it

In 1991, the soon-to-be graduates at the Geneva School of Engineering were presented with their final project prior to receiving their diploma — simplify the perpetual calendar.

Although the task was easier said than done, their work led to the inception of the annual calendar complication, patented by Patek Philippe in collaboration with the bright engineering minds at the GSE. Five years later, Patek debuted the Reference 5035 which marked the world’s first-ever annual calendar movement and finally bridged the gap between a triple date function and the formidable quantième perpétuel.

This piece happens to be an exquisite take on the Patek Philippe Complications Annual Calendar dating back to the 2010s. Designated as a Reference 5036/1R, this delightful timepiece features a nearly perfect 37mm 18K rose gold case with sculpted, contoured lugs, a concave bezel, and a polished finish.

Its silver dial features applied, luminous Roman indices; a matching luminous feuille handset; a date window at 6 o’clock; and an array of indicators including a pair of recessed subsidiary registers denoting month and day; a moonphase aperture; and a tidy power reserve display positioned directly below the 12 o’clock marker.

The reverse features an exhibition back providing a window through which you can admire the self-winding Caliber 315/199 with a matching gold winding rotor engraved with the ‘Calatrava Cross’ seal. Accompanied by a magnificent 18K rose gold multi-link bracelet with a signed, locking clasp, this piece is an absolute vibe on the wrist.

Packing pedigree, refinement, function and outstanding craftsmanship that can only be expected by the maison, this 5036 needs to be experienced in person to truly understand its greatness.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few luxury brands in the world carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told ‘You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
