Why We Love it

If you haven’t heard of NOMOS, listen up!

Over the past several years, the company has surged in popularity due to its minimalist, clean designs, German origins, and attractive price points. Few other brands pack such comprehensive horological value into their wares as the Glashütte-based firm, which was founded just weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The particular NOMOS we have here is a Tangente Sport Neomatik Date, Reference 581. A sporty version of the classic Tangente model, its highly attractive dial and refined bracelet design belie its robust, water-resistant construction. Unabashedly Bauhaus in inspiration, it’s housed in a 42mm stainless steel case with ‘holey’ lugs, a sapphire crystal, a signed screw-down crown, and a polished bezel. It features a beautiful, luminous gloss black dial with printed 'Arabic' indices and a matching handset, a running seconds dial above 6:00, and a date window at 3:00.

Powering the Tangente is one of the secrets to the NOMOS brand: the in-house, ultra-thin, automatic Neomatik Calibre DUW 6101 with a power reserve of 42 hours. One of many such in-house movements produced by the company, it’s simple, reliable, and precise. When combined with the watch’s stainless steel multi-link bracelet with a signed, push-button clasp, what we have is a highly considered design whose rugged architecture makes for a versatile wearing experience.

This is no doubt a special watch for the discerning watch lover. Don’t let it get away!

Brand Story

+
The little town of Glashütte, situated close to the eastern edge of Germany and home to only 7,000 people, is the birthplace of German watchmaking. Glashütte is home to brands like A. Lange & Söhne, Mühle, and Glashütte Original, all incredible brands in their own right. But there is another brand that calls this little area of Germany home, and that is NOMOS.

NOMOS was founded by Roland Schwertner on January 10th, 1990, two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall. For the next 15 years the company created multiple patents for watch components--like date mechanisms and power reserve indicators--all in preparation for the day they would build their own movements in-house. That day came in 2005 when the firm released the Tangomat, powered by an automatic caliber all their own, and at a price point that virtually no other manufacturer could touch.

As the years rolled on, NOMOS continued in that spirit of affordable self-sufficiency, one of creating in-house movements and selling their watches at prices that belie the care and quality of construction that go into producing them.
