Why We Love it

The Patek Philippe Nautilus is one of Gérald Genta's most enduring creations: a luxury sports watch that can be as elegant as evening wear and as effortless as a favorite t-shirt. Introduced in 1976 with the now-legendary Ref. 3700, the Nautilus redefined what a modern, cosmopolitan watch could be, paving the way for a new era of steel-as-luxury design and forever reshaping watch culture.

This midsize Nautilus, the Reference 3800/5J, carries that same DNA forward in a more versatile silhouette. Measuring 37mm and rendered here in 18k yellow gold, it's elevated even further by a diamond-set bezel and matching diamond-set bracelet links—glamorous, yes, but still unmistakably Nautilus. Inside beats the Patek Philippe Calibre 335 SC, an automatic movement celebrated for its precision, refinement, and thin profile. Whether it lands on the wrist of a client who loves jewelry-forward design or a fashion-first mindset, the 3800 wears with intention and attitude.

Yellow gold and diamonds bring sparkle; the porthole case and horizontal dial keep it grounded. That tension—luxury meets sport, elegance meets ease—is what makes the Nautilus so addictive.

While early wristwatches were indeed created for women, Patek Philippe's clientele has long influenced both sides of the design spectrum—ornament and innovation, artistry and engineering. By the time Genta sketched the Nautilus in the 1970s, men's watch tastes were turning toward sleek, athletic silhouettes, and the original 3700 answered that call. Soon after, in the 1980s, the 3800 emerged, offering the same iconic language in a more compact form, appealing equally to collectors with smaller wrists, design-driven clients, and those who preferred a touch of refinement over sheer scale.

Fast-forward to today, and the Nautilus knows no gender. The modern collector—male or female—chooses based on vibe, not labels. And when a watch blends diamonds, gold, heritage, and Genta's legendary lines, it transcends categories altogether. The 3800 isn't just a "midsize Nautilus."

It's the sweet spot.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.
