Why We Love it

Not every timepiece from the world’s greatest watchmaker fits neatly into the mold of an overarching theme or collection.

While we love a simple Patek Philippe Calatrava, a sporty Aquanaut, or a complicated perpetual calendar as much as the next guy, the oddball, overlooked and usually limited-production shaped watches made by the maison in the second half of the 20th century are often some of the most innovative and charming in the brand’s oeuvre.

The Gondolo collection in particular has an interesting history rooted, not in Geneva, but Rio de Janeiro. Patek enjoyed a fruitful partnership with the Brazilian retailer, Gondolo & Labouriau, for almost 60 years — from that, the Gondolo collection was born. Veering away from the traditional aesthetics of round-cased watches, the Gondolo contains a wide variety of complications in tonneau-shaped cases that explore a more adventurous side of Patek Phillipe’s watchmaking.

This particular Gondolo is of the more complicated ilk, and perfect for those who enjoy their haute horlogerie packaged in an avante-garde format: Housed in a 30mm x33mm 18K rose gold cushion case with a diamond-set bezel, a signed crown, and a sapphire crystal, it features a handsome, silver dial with printed indexes, a matching lumed 'leaf' handset, and a subsidiary seconds dial at 6. An outer, applied gold minute track completes the picture of a unique, slightly quirky piece of fine watchmaking.

Powered by the manually-wound Patek Philippe Cal. 215 PS movement and paired to a signed, alligator leather strap with a rose gold pin buckle. While everyone else is zigging, try zagging with this left-of-center Patek masterpiece!

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
