Eberhard Monopusher Chronograph

Although Eberhard is perhaps known best for its line of dive watches, the brand’s mastery of chronographs is under-sung… almost criminally so.

Eberhard was an early proponent of wrist-worn chronographs, and released artful chronographs throughout the 1930s and 1940s that sing to us in an alluring timbre that is hard to resist.

The Extra-Fort is perhaps their best-known chronograph produced during this period. First seeing life as an automatic, time-only watch, the Extra-Fort was brought to its fullest potential as a chronograph. The Extra-Fort’s large, sturdy case foreshadows the sports models of the 1950s and 1960s, like the Heuer Carrera or the Omega Speedmaster.

However, prior to the release of the Extra-Fort in 1947, Eberhard created some handsome and desirable chronographs—like this one, which has much to offer, both technically and aesthetically.

This particular chronograph features a 40mm case, large for the period. Its size is perhaps a holdover from the days when watches were worn in the pocket, not on the wrist—a fact which is attested by its hinged case back. Known as a “hunter case,” it was so-called because a fox-hunter could take out his pocket watch and open it with one hand while holding onto the reins of his horse with the other.

When compared to other chronographs produced during the 1940s, which had snap or screw-on case backs, this feature truly makes the watch seem as though it’s a product of a bygone era—even earlier than the one in which it was produced.

The elegance of the 18k yellow gold case is carried through to the dial, a warm coral color that truly makes the watch stand out amongst a sea of white, silver, or black-dialed chronographs. But with this chronograph, the beauty is not merely for show, captured only by its externals. Popping the case back open reveals the movement, an elegant affair with a column wheel.

But what’s perhaps the most unique feature of this watch is the fact that it’s a monopusher design. All functions of the chronograph—start, stop, and reset—are controlled by the pusher at upper pusher. What appears to be a second pusher is in fact a locking mechanism that locks the chronograph pusher in place when the chronograph is running.

Unique and rare, this chronograph combines technical prowess in a package that is as beautiful as it is timeless.

We generally ship our products via FedEx, fully insured, within 5 business days of purchase. An adult signature is required for receipt of all packages for insurance purposes. Expedited shipping is available at an additional cost. We are also happy to hand deliver your purchase in Manhattan or you may pick it up at our showroom.

Returns must be sent overnight or by priority international delivery, fully insured and paid for by the customer. A restocking fee may apply. Watches must be returned in the same condition as initially shipped.
