Why We Love it

Why We Love It

Singapore, January 1956.

Land Rover was mounting an overland expedition from London to Singapore in their new Defender, and somebody walked into Lee Chay & Co. and purchased this Omega Seamaster - and what a Seamaster is it.

This watch illustrates so many of the things we love most about early Seamasters - a beautifully aged two-tone honeycomb dial, applied gold indices and arabic numerals, as well as an early "beefy lug" still retaining its bevels. All of this packed into a surprisingly modern wearing 35mm - and an automatic movement to boot.

This Seamaster, replete with its original Omega Strap, inner box, and stamped warranty papers from Singapore comes from the collection of one of our own here at Analog/Shift - and its ready for its next home.

The Story

Since the Seamaster’s launch in 1948, it has been the vibrant, beating heart of Omega's collection. The key to its longevity, in part, lies in its adaptability. It comes in dive watch models, which were worn by professional divers (and James Bond), or dress models favored by the likes of Mad Men’s Don Draper.

In many ways, the Seamaster can be seen as Omega's counterpart to Rolex’s Datejust. They have many similarities: a waterproof case, in steel or gold, with slim proportions. However, what gives the Seamaster an edge over the Datejust is its affordability.

Whether steel and sporty or gold and glimmering, there’s truly a Seamaster for every taste, every budget, and every wrist.
