Why We Love it

Not every interesting watch was ever intended to be sold.

In fact, some of the most fascinating pieces exist entirely outside the catalog.

This unusual Hublot "Service" watch was never offered through traditional retail channels. Instead, it was provided to clients while their own Hublot was away for servicing—a temporary companion designed to keep them connected to the brand until their watch returned home. Most were worn, forgotten, or discarded. Few survived in such appealing condition.

Viewed through that lens, it's a remarkably clever object. Rather than producing a generic loaner watch, Hublot created something that distilled its design language to its essentials. The matte steel case is clean and architectural, while the stark black dial strips away virtually every conventional element. No numerals. No date. No unnecessary text. Just an oversized Hublot logo and the word 'SERVICE' boldly printed across the lower half of the dial. An ironic 'NOT FOR SALE' marking is engraved on the caseback.

The result feels surprisingly contemporary. In fact, viewed today, it almost resembles an artist's proof, a prototype, or a conceptual design study rather than a customer-service accessory.

Measuring 36mm in matte steel, the watch wears comfortably on the wrist and is powered by a reliable quartz movement. The minimalist dial sits beneath a sapphire crystal, while a black leather strap and steel buckle complete the understated monochromatic aesthetic. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters, making it every bit as practical as it is unusual.

Perhaps most importantly, it represents a side of watch collecting that many enthusiasts overlook: the ephemera. The objects that were never meant to become collectibles often end up being the most collectible of all.

A fun and witty addition to any collection, the best conversation starter in the room might be the watch that was never supposed to be sold in the first place.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1980 by Italian entrepreneur Carlo Crocco, Hublot made an immediate impact by doing something almost unheard of at the time: pairing a precious gold case with a simple rubber strap. The bold design established the brand's philosophy of "The Art of Fusion," combining unexpected materials, modern styling, and traditional Swiss watchmaking. Under the leadership of Jean-Claude Biver in the 2000s, Hublot experienced explosive growth with the launch of the Big Bang collection, becoming one of the defining luxury sports watches of the modern era. Today, the brand is known for its innovative materials, contemporary aesthetics, and willingness to challenge conventional notions of watch design.
