Why We Love it

Grand Seiko is a darling of contemporary watch collectors. Taking even a cursory glance at the design specs — or better yet, an example in the metal — it’s easy to see why.

The artisanal talent that goes into the design and manufacturing process of their dials alone is breathtaking. Depending on your viewing angle, the color and texture of a Grand Seiko dial plays dynamically in the light with breathtaking vibrance. They’re works of art steeped in Japanese tradition.

This particular reference, an SBGP015, is a Limited Edition model produced to celebrate six decades of high Japanese craftsmanship. Housed in a 40mm stainless steel case, it offers a blue ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal, signed crown, with Zaratsu polishing techniques deployed throughout. Its radial sunburst dial is finished in a deep blue tone with applied polished indices, a framed date window at 3 o'clock, and an ‘Alpha’ handset featuring a distinguishable red center seconds hand.

This model is powered by an in-house, high-precision Calibre 9F85 quartz movement.  Each quartz crystal is homegrown and aged by GS for a period of three months and integrated with its own unique circuit compensated for temperature changes, making it perhaps the most over-engineered quartz mechanism on the planet! This one-owner example is in excellent, lightly-worn condition and comes paired to its original multi-link stainless steel bracelet with a signed push-button deployant clasp. It  also comes complete with its full set of factory collateral including boxes, papers, books, and extract.

Handsome, practical and limited to 2000 units produced, this is a stealthy statement piece from one of the best in the game!

Brand Story

+
The Grand Seiko was created by Taro Tanaka, a young designer whom Seiko had hired right out of school. Inspired by the way Swiss watches “sparkled brilliantly,” Tanaka set out to design a watch with sharp edges, brushed surfaces, and a mirror finish that would rival anything created by the Swiss. In 1960, the first Grand Seiko—Reference 3180—debuted.

Other models of Grand Seiko would follow, coupling those elegant “sparkling” cases with high-grade (often hi-beat) manually-wound or automatic movements. When compared to the no-nonsense tool watches like the 6309 line of divers, the Grand Seiko was worlds away—refined, elegant, and cosmopolitan. Seiko intended the watch to be an answer to dress watches crafted by the Swiss, and at that it certainly did succeed.

Well-regarded in its home country, the Grand Seiko reached a global audience in 2010—and has captivated consumers ever since.
