Improvements over the original 1680 model included a uni-directional ratcheting “click” bezel, a sapphire crystal with a lower profile and a quick-set date function.

The 16800 was also given an increased depth rated to 300m, up from the 200m depth rating of the 1680. A high beat movement was also added, offering additional accuracy. Early 16800 models featured a matte dial, while later variants became some of the first Submariner’s to feature the now ubiquitous glossy dials with applied luminous indices framed with white gold surrounds. For these reasons, the 16800 is referred to as a 'transitional' reference.

This particular example dates to circa 1986, and features a case and bracelet showing signs of a professional refinishing and only light wear throughout. Its Tritium handset, dial, and bezel pip have taken on an absolutely stunning, even patina that rival some of the aging we've seen on watches twice its age - the result is one of the finest transitional Submariners that we have come across.

In many ways this is the epitome of low key watch nerd's Submariner - in that if you don't know exactly what it is, you wouldn't be able to tell at a passing glance.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0809/1255/products/AS04439_40920363_ROLEX_SUBMARINER_16800-6.jpg?v=1629827393
