After securing a controlling interest in the firm, Jean and Charles Henri Stern decided to enlist the help of an English designer named David Penney to create a simple watch that would come in at a lower price point and appeal to the firm’s clientele.

Using the principles espoused by the Bauhaus school and its minimalist, function-first philosophy, Penney conceived the Calatrava, taking its name from the Spanish military order established in the 12th century which had become the symbol of Patek Philippe. Since its debut in 1932, the Calatrava has become a byword for a simple, time-only dress watch — even from brands other than Patek itself.

This particular model, a Reference 5524G-001, is an upsized and much sportier expression - seemingly far removed from the diminutive scale and dressier aesthetics of your grandfather’s Calatrava. Referred to as the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time, it features a 42mm white gold case with a sapphire crystal, a signed crown, pushers at 8 o’clock and 10 o’clock, and a smooth polished bezel. The blue varnished dial features a set of applied, stylized luminous 'Arabic' indices, a subsidiary date indicator at 6 o’clock, local and home indicator apertures, and a matching luminous ‘sword’ handset.

This piece comes fitted to a signed navy leather strap with a signed 18k white gold pin buckle, and is powered by Patek Philippe's automatic winding Calibre 324 S C FUS movement equipped with an incredibly practical dual-button system to control an intuitive jump hour system.
