"Everest 1953"

Though Rolex is perhaps most commonly associated with the conquest of Mt. Everest in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, another watch company featured prominently in that famed expedition — namely, British firm Smiths.

Though debate has raged for decades as to whether or not Hillary wore his Rolex upon the ascent on May 29th, 1953, what is certain is that he did in fact have his Smiths on his person: "I carried your watch to the summit," a period advertisement reads. "It worked perfectly." (Whether "carried" means "wore" or simply "had on my person" is a matter of debate!)

Dating to 1954, this advertisement proudly features a Smiths De Luxe floating over Everest's peak with the quote from Hilary prominently displayed in its center. Though Smiths is long since defunct — it divested of its watch business during the Quartz Crisis — the advertisement serves as a reminder of its role in one of the most important feats of exploration in modern history.

This ad is custom framed in a 12 1/4” x 15 1/4” solid wood frame with a black stained finish. It features a custom-measured, hand-cut 4-ply matte in white, complimenting all the ad tones. Every material used is acid-free and the glass is anti-reflective and offers UV-protection to keep this precious ad preserved no matter where you decide to hang it up. Speaking of which, hanging your newly purchased ad is a seamless task, as this particular frame comes with an additional hanging wire and felt pads for wall protection.

Whether you're an exploration aficionado, a watch nerd, or both, this proud advertisement from the 1950s will surely brighten up your home or office. After all, who can resist the view from the top!
