2022 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak/Patek Philippe Nautilus Artwork by Gérald Genta

Gérald Genta famously conceptualized the Royal Oak after receiving a phone call from Audemars Piguet the night before a major trade show; he had exactly one evening to complete the design.

In the early 1970s, few could have conceived of the madness, the obsession that would surround these two watches some five decades later. (Indeed, upon its release in 1972, the Royal Oak was considered somewhat of an oddball. And how could AP possibly price it the way they did when it was made of stainless steel?!) Now, of course, we understand: Genta’s genius integrated bracelet design, the petit patisserie dial, the porthole and diving helmet inspiration, the slim, automatic movements… If there’s a single designer in the history of 20th-century horology who deserved to be revered like a god, it’s Gérald Genta.

In 2022, his original hand-painted design for the Patek Philippe Nautilus — his other famed integrated-bracelet, luxury sports watch — hit the auction block in Hong Kong, hammering for a cool $727,000.

What we have here is an opportunity to own a set of truly pristine, original magazine pages from an article on this Picasso of watch designers that showcases the designs of his most famous works. The pages are identically cropped and framed together in tribute to the legacy of Genta and to recognize the iconic status of these respective timepieces. For the Genta devotee, could there possibly be a better gift?

These magazine pages were stumbled upon while pursuing a newstand. Immediately they leaped out of the magazine and begged to be framed together. A few weeks were spent raiding bookstores, collecting the best-condition copies containing the article and rejecting copies in subpar condition, with bends and/or fingerprint smudges. Ultimately the niche issue went out of circulation.

An extremely popular framing, only a few mint examples remain. Just as the watch industry didn’t know what the future held for the Royal Oak and Nautilus, the future of these unique magazine pages remains uncertain…this may be the last chance to own this set!
