1966 Rolex Explorer 1016 'Top Of The Matterhorn'

Yes, this is specifically a Rolex Explorer ad. But it’s much more than that: It’s also a beautiful photograph — a recreated, styled shot for sure, but nonetheless breathtaking. The climber’s hand is captured in close-up detail, grappling a mountainside, such that you can feel the setting and sense the exertion through his knuckles, veins and pores. Especially in-person, this image has the beauty and intensity you often experience in gallery exhibits of portraits by acclaimed photographers.

And then we get to the Rolex aspect: There’s the no-frills Explorer affixed to the climber’s wrist, firmly secured via its steel rivet bracelet. And that tremendous headline, “Because there isn’t any watch repair shop on top of the Matterhorn,” truly seals the deal. Truthfully, it’s a phrase that applies to most every Rolex model, with their seamless cases, climate resistance, robustness and accuracy. When you really think about it, this ad is for Rolex watches full stop as much as it is for the Rolex Explorer.

This particular ad is known to have existed in four different publications; the example we have for sale here, which is in near-perfect condition, comes from the best-quality magazine of the four.

About our collaboration with Ad Patina

We're thrilled to be collaborating once again with our longtime friend Nick at Ad Patina to bring you a selection of the most-popular and hard to find original vintage magazine advertisements curated specifically for Analog:Shift!

Scouring the world for forgotten marketing treasures, Ad Patina's raison de être very much mimics our own - to hunt down these wonderful bits of history, preserve and restore them as needed, and share them with an enthusiastic community.

These documents of horological and advertising history have entered the collecting conversation as the ultimate accompanying accessory to go along with hobbies and passions. They have found themselves framed in homes and offices around the world.

Every one of these wonderful pieces is a genuine, vintage advertisement that has been professionally framed to ensure years of enjoyment to come - no reprints or reproductions here!

Much like a traditional piece of art - a painting or photograph - an original advertisement can be appreciated for its design as well as for its power to evoke nostalgia. Something vintage enthusiasts know all about!
