A crisp matte black dial with simple polished hour markers add a touch of elegance to the watch and pair perfectly with the black stick hands. The cushion shape gives the watch a strong wrist presence, and the ultra-thin case is a welcome change from the Submariners and Speedmasters that are so often strapped to our wrists. Instead of assembling watches from parts produced by various manufactures like many brands of the mid 20th century, the Swiss brand was developing and producing their own innovative designs. The White Shadow was not just powered by any old movement, but an in-house, micro-rotor automatic movement. But wait, this wasn’t the run-of-the-mill in-house micro-rotor automatic movement, it was the world’s thinnest automatic movement for over a decade after its introduction in the mid-60s. As far as we’re concerned, that an impressive bit of horological history, and we’re just thankful that such an important movement is housed in such a good looking watch.

Speaking of the White Shadow’s looks, this is one of the first major watches designed by the late, great Gerald Genta, the prodigy of watch design who was responsible for the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus. Genta designed the White Shadow prior to those pieces while still working for Universal Genève, where he was also the brains behind the Polerouter (see one, HERE). With its record-breaking movement and Genta’s artistic touch, the White Shadow deserves as much recognition as any other UG, whether it’s a Tri-Compax or Nina Rindt chronograph.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0809/1255/products/Universal_Geneve_White_Shadow_Box_and_Papers_AS00850_Culture2.jpg?v=1432841804
universal-geneve-bumper-wind-box-papers
Universal Genève Bumper Wind

There is fire sweeping through the inner circles of the New York City collector community that can be summed up in two words: Universal Genève.

Until recently, this high end Swiss brand was little-known outside of their Polerouter models (designed by a young Gerald Genta), but recently, intense interest among collectors and enthusiasts has pulled the largely defunct manufacture into the limelight - a light that has long been overdue.

Universal Genève was once responsible for some of the most beautiful dress watches and chronographs from the mid-20th century. The "Nina Rindt" Chronograph by Universal Geneve is the single most in-demand timepiece we have ever had pleasure to deal with. These spectacular chronographs are exceptionally rare (one for every 100 Paul Newman Daytonas is probably a reasonable guess) and the few that have come to market in the recent past are well known. Having received dozens of inquiries and requests to locate in the past year, we knew that interest in this particular example would be at an all time high. For that reason, we have decided to offer it in the fairest way we could think of - by putting it on offer publicly for several weeks, and letting everyone who might be interested take a shot at getting it.

To that end, we are putting this exceptional piece up on offer through October 31st. Between now and then we will be fielding inquiries and taking offers, and can arrange to show it privately in New York to any interested parties. At the end of the day on Halloween, one lucky bidder will be getting a real treat!

In the interest of full disclosure: YES, this is the very same watch featured earlier this year on Hodinkee, HERE. It has changed hands privately since that article was published and we are now incredibly fortunate to have it on offer directly. In all likelihood it won't be coming up again anytime soon.

Now, on to the watch!

When it comes to vintage chronographs, "Panda Dials" are a whole different kind of awesome that have been getting lots of attention on the collector market as of late. The nickname refers to a white dial with black subsidiary registers, and is a simple aesthetic choice which has become extremely sought after in the collector community, with Panda Dial variants often commanding many multiples of their "standard" dial brethren (think "Siffert" Heuer Autavias, and "Paul Newman" Rolex Daytonas). Of course, a timepiece need not have an association with a famous historical figure to have the same great looks, but when they do it makes the story all the sweeter.

This particular watch, originally known simply by its Reference number (885103/03), is now only referred to as the "Nina Rindt" amongst collectors. Already a stunning vintage sports watch, this model was catapulted into collector fame by being worn by the famous model Nina Rindt, nee' Nina Lincoln, who was married to the legendary Formula One driver Joachim Rindt in 1967. Although he died in a crash during a practice run for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Italy in 1970, Joachim Rindt went on to win the Formula One World Driver's Championship posthumously, which has never happened before or since.

His wife, Nina, was unquestionably the better looking of the pair, and one look at period photographs of her wearing the watch makes most men go weak in the knees...whether the cause was her honey-colored hair and high cheekbones or the chronograph strapped to her wrist on a wide leather strap is indeterminate...

Dating from the 1960s, this steel chronograph is sized between 36-37mm, far more wearable than you might think, and wears similarly to early references of the Daytona. And the comparisons to Rolex's iconic motorsports chronograph don't end there. Like the most popular versions of the Daytona, the Universal Geneve features an absolutely lovely Panda Dial with triple subsidiary register layout, featuring registers for 30-minute and 12-hour counters along with sweeping subsidiary seconds. This particular example shows an incredible tropical fading, in which the once black sub dials and markers have lightened to a rich brown. The white dial is surrounded by a black outer tachometer ring, nearly identical to those found on the Omega Speedmaster, but smaller in size.

Like the early Daytonas, the power for this gorgeous timepiece comes from the legendary Calibre 72 manually-winding chronograph movement by Valjoux, a movement renowned for its robust and accurate performance. Only a handful of these special chronographs were made to begin with, and even fewer remain in existence today, and none that we've seen have the tremendous tropical patina exhibited by this truly beautiful example.

As mentioned above, this is a truly rare opportunity to get your hands on one of the most desirable chronographs from the golden age of sporting timers. Instead of assembling watches from parts produced by various manufactures like many brands of the mid 20th century, the Swiss brand was developed and produced their own innovative designs.

That would be Patek Philippe.

This example of the Tri-Compax is from one of the earliest generations of the watch, and features a handsome gold-plated case with a white dial, accented by Arabic numerals and dart indices. The first Polerouter was released in 1954 to celebrate and promote Scandinavian Airlines’ Royal Viking polar flights between New York City, Los Angeles and Europe. The flights forged a new route over the North Pole, reducing flight times between the two continents. Flying over the North Pole presented a unique set of challenges for a watch, and the Polerouter was designed to be highly resistant to magnetic fields (in addition to the usual shock and water resistance) so as to maintain accuracy during the trip.

Polerouters are not especially rare watches, though that is not to say that what’s available is often in very good condition. Early Polerouters employed a bumper automatic movement, but the micro-rotor movement is what Universal Genève is really known for. The brand attained a reputation in its heyday for well-constructed, aesthetically-appealing designs, typified in the Compax and Polerouter models. Yet even with its commitment to aesthetic excellence, Universal Genève was no stranger to innovation. Bulova's introduction of the Accutron 218 movement in 1965 intrigued and impressed brands and consumers alike, and Universal Genève sought to implement this new technology, a decade before the Quartz Revolution changed the watchmaking game forever. The Unisonic was the result.

The Accutron 218 simplified the design of the now-iconic Accutron Spaceview 214 movement. To address the problem of magnetism on a watch’s movement, SAS leaned on Universal Genève to produce a watch that could withstand the magnetic waves emitted by the instruments in an airplane’s cockpit (such as the navigational and communications equipment), as well as the strong magnetic field concentrated over the Pole itself. The concept of anti-magnetic watches was not untried by other brands—IWC made headway in creating the Mark XI pilot’s watch in 1949, which enclosed the watch’s movement with an iron dust covering.

But an anti-magnetic, purpose-built watch represented a departure from the watches that had been Universal Genève’s forte, namely elegant dress watches and chronographs.

This was the genesis of the “Polarouter’ (later renamed the Polerouter), brainchild of a young designer who was only just stretching his legs, creatively speaking. The scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, however, had theirs fixed firmly on what was happening beneath the ocean’s surface.

Founded in 1903, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography was initially an offshoot of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. Its founder, Dr. Fred Baker, a physician who specialized in ear, nose, and throat studies, had a fascination with mollusks, particularly those that thrived in the ocean around San Diego. In the early 1900s, Baker approached a friend, H.P. Wood—secretary of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce—to set up a marine biology laboratory under the aegis of the University of California. The first expedition in 1903—which used the boathouse of the Hotel del Coronado as its headquarters—was a success, leading to the establishment of the Marine Biological Association.

By 1907, the Association had moved to La Jolla. Five years later, it was absorbed into the University of California system under the name “Scripps Institution for Biological Research,” after local philanthropists E.W. Scripps and his sister Ellen. In his role in the Navy, Revelle was in a position to help determine which scientific projects the Navy would fund. Revelle believed that the Navy’s primary focus should be to foster research of the world’s oceans, an attitude that he carried over to his work at Scripps; while at Scripps, Revelle notably launched studies that examined the effects of atomic radiation on ocean life.

Also, as the founding chairman of the Committee on Climate Change and the Ocean, Revelle co-authored a paper that suggested that a “greenhouse effect” would lead to global warming.

Meanwhile, in the 1960s, researchers at Scripps who were studying the distribution of sea-floor slopes led to the creation of the Deep Tow instrument system, which would prove instrumental in mapping the ocean floor. Throughout the Polerouter's 15-year run, Universal Genève deviated from Gerald Genta's original design, releasing variants with a panoply of case sizes and configurations.
