Why We Love it

Tudor’s legacy as maker of high-quality tool watches was cemented long before the brand re-entered the American market in late 2013.

The manufacture’s decision to tap its heritage designs when iterating its new collection has gone a long way toward creating fresh Tudor devotees and frankly, a darling amongst the enthusiast community. Whether it’s the Heritage Chrono inspired by the 1970s ‘Monte Carlo’ chronograph, or more recent examples such as the Black Bay 54, Tudor FXD and Pelagos 39, Tudor’s modern lineup is a love letter to some of the very best sports watches of all time.

One of their most popular models — and not without good reason — is the Black Bay GMT. Offering ‘true’ GMT functionality via an independently adjustable hour hand, it’s the perfect traveler’s watch when you consider its intriguing value proposition and quality, as well as reliability, that naturally comes with the Tudor name.

This piece, a Reference 79830RB, features a 41mm stainless steel case equipped with a bidirectional 24-hour split bezel, a sapphire crystal, and a ‘Rose’ signed screw-down crown. The luminous matte black dial houses a set of stark white hour indices accompanied by a matching ‘snowflake’ handset, a red ‘snowflake’ GMT hand and a date indicator at 3 o’clock.

Mounted on an Oyster-style stainless steel bracelet with a locking deployant clasp, this piece is mechanized by the COSC-certified MT5625 automatic movement. What’s more, this BB GMT has all of its factory goodies that come along with it!

Handsome and robust — this Black Bay GMT is ready to be your companion for all your adventures abroad!

Brand Story

+
Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf created Tudor in 1926 for the everyman — for miners, construction workers and all sorts of tradesmen. For your everyday person Rolex was sometimes — and is now more so than ever — out of reach. It was meant for the explorer and the businessman, whereas Tudor was to be a different creature entirely.

In creating Tudor, Wilsdorf wanted to offer “a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standards of dependability for which Rolex is famous.”

Tudors were in many ways Rolexes in all but name, with the same waterproof Oyster cases and similar styling. However, in order to keep costs down, the brand used off-the-shelf Swiss movements rather than their own in-house calibres. What resulted were watches that were more affordable than Rolexes to the consumer, but still uniformly tough and reliable.

Today Tudor has certainly defeated any impression of being the redheaded stepchild of the Rolex family, and their current timepiece collection — as well as their vintage counterparts — are getting the recognition and respect they most rightfully deserve. From the colorful “Home Plate” chronograph to the complicated Advisor, these models often picked up where Rolex left off, daring to be more bold and playful in their design. And now that the brand has introduced in-house movements while still managing to keep pricing modest, the company is better poised than ever to win the hearts and minds of millions of new watch enthusiasts.
