Why We Love it

Why We Love It

Collecting name brand watches is cool. We get it. Rolex, Omega, Patek - while your interest in these brands might derive from their design, history, or inherent investment value, but let's be honest we all know there is something emotional that comes from wearing a watch with a legendary name printed on the dial.

So what about those watches that have design, history and inherent value without that instantly recognizable brand logo emblazoned on the dial?

Well, there's something there, too.

Lemania is the perfect representation of that - vintage watch cognoscenti will know that Lemania's rich history in movement manufacture is the powerhouse behind some of the most important chronograph movements of all time - the likes of which have been found in everything from Omega to Patek. But to the layman, its just another brand name lost to time.

The coolest thing about Lemania - before it was rolled up into another brand - is that they produced self-labeled watches for both consumer and military applications, the former of which we have here.

This beautiful glossy black dialed two-register chronograph is fitted into a steel case measuring 37mm in diameter, and features luminous Arabic indices, oval pushers, and stylized luminous hands, and is of course powered by an in-house column wheel chronograph movement. This is exactly the sort of watch that would come with a hanger price several multiples the actual ask if it said something different on the dial.

Those who know, know. Everyone else...well, feel bad for them. They haven't yet gotten the memo.

The Story

The Calibre 15TL was just one of many historic calibres crafted by Lemania, one of the leading movement manufacturers of the 20th century.

Adapted from a pocket watch movement, the Calibre 15TL is large for the time—33.3mm on its own. Serviceable and yet still elegant, the Calibre 15TL would form the basis for the legendary CH27. History would know it as the Omega Calibre .321 that Buzz Aldrin would take to the moon in Apollo 11 inside his Speedmaster.

Its successor, the aforementioned Calibre .321, ranks as one of the most important chronograph movements of all time. But the 15TL is no less worthy of attention. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s it was found most often in watches issued to the world’s air forces, as well as in civilian chronographs seen here.
