Lange & Sohne, the flagship of German watchmaking as an industry.

This Lange 1, Reference 704.032 isn’t your run of the mill piece either. Fashioned from yellow gold with a cream dial, the Lange 1 Tourbillon is one of the most complicated configurations of the Lange 1 on the market. Seamlessly integrated into the Lange 1 design DNA, Lange has tastefully tucked the tourbillon display with a fully black-polished support at 5 o’clock. Since the tourbillon replaced the usual location for the subsidiary seconds, the seconds dial has been moved to within the primary time display at roughly 7:30 on the dial.

In spite of the complication, this reference is housed in Lange’s classic 38.5mm case sizing. Perfectly proportioned in the modern era, this size is extremely comfortable on a variety of wrists.

The iconic Lange 1 dial features the time display on the left side of the dial, counterbalanced by an outsized date at 2 o'clock, power reserve at 3 o'clock, and finally, the tourbillon at 5 o'clock. This watch emphasizes the fact that a watch can maintain visual balance in spite of asymmetry. It’s truly a brilliant work of design.

Flipping the watch over, we are met by an equally striking caseback. Finished with many callbacks to the pocket watch era, Lange movements don’t look like Swiss movements. Golden chatons, Glashutte striping, and freehand engraving all over the tourbillon supports. Patek recognized a gap in offerings, between the simple and (relatively) accessible Calatrava classic dress watches, and the complicated, and in turn, highly expensive, Grand Complications. The so called “Annual Calendar” bridged the gap between these two price points, offering a natural progression for collectors looking to access a Patek complication at a more accessible price point. The Annual Calendar needs adjusting just once per year. This change allows the movement to be far more economical to produce, easier to service, and cheaper to purchase.

The inaugural Reference 5035 Annual Calendar of 1996 was a tremendous success, and ever since, Patek’s Annual Calendars have been a popular favorite. Annual Calendars from Patek represent the bread and butter of the brand — perfectly executed complicated dress watches.

In 2006, Patek Philippe released the Reference 5960P, a platinum annual calendar coupled with a flyback chronograph. Distinguished from the other annual calendars because of its decidedly sporty look, the 5960 stood out from the crowd. It wasn’t only noteworthy for the flyback, however, it also featured a modern annual calendar layout. Instead of displaying the annual calendar in subsidiary dials, Patek instead used aperture displays. While apertures have been used by Patek throughout history (take the Reference 3448 perpetual calendar, for example), usually, the apertures are displayed in-line. For the 5960, Patek instead made vaulted, framed apertures that follow the curve of the case. This made for a really modern take on the annual calendar and breathed new life into the collection. It’s not for everyone, but it’s a completely new look.

This particular Reference 5961P-001 is executed in platinum, with a deep blue dial. The calendar complications and power reserve sit at the top of the dial, while the minute and hour totalizers are placed at 6 o’clock within a single oversized sub-register. A day/night indicator is easy to miss within the subdial. The case is topped with a sapphire crystal. What distinguishes the 5961P-001 from a 5960 is that this rarer reference comes complete with a diamond-set bezel and baguette hour markers, an incredible paring.

A number of other stylistic choices were made with the 5960/ 5961 that separated it from previous references. The 5960 was sized at a comfortable 40.5mm— a sporty sizing for a Patek complication, but one that suits the rest of the look of the watch. The 5960 is finished with a signed crown and engraved pump pushers.

Dating to 2015, this example is presented with its inner and outer boxes, papers, and certificate of origin. What was so strange about this watch, you might ask? It remains the only Submariner — from either Tudor or Rolex — to have been equipped with a manually-wound movement. While this made for an extremely thin case, it didn't necessarily lend itself well to the requirements of the budding SCUBA diver, and was quickly retired in favor of the automatic Ref. 7924 "Big. In fact, back in 2017, a red-depth rating Ref. 7923 sold for $99,999 on eBay — the most expensive Tudor to ever sell publicly at the time. This hand-wound movement keeps the case comparatively thin and turns the Ref. 7923 into an excellent daily driver. Equipped with heavy-duty spring bars, we've paired it to a thick leather strap with tone-on-tone stitching and a stainless steel pin buckle for a more formal look.

While any mode of 1950s-era Tudor Submariner is a rare bird, indeed, this Ref. 7923 is something different entirely: Manually-wound, svelte, and exceedingly scarce with its red depth rating, it's a museum-quality watch the likes of which the collector community only sees a few times in — well — a lifetime. The company’s history reaches all the way back to 1881, when watchmaker Achilles Ditesheim opened a workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds. His brothers Léopold and Isidore joined him in 1886. Production from that point on proved how true the name brand was—it means "always in motion" in Esperanto.

The early 1900's not only proved significant for Movado, but for horological history as a whole. Between 1902 and 1912, Movado's ingenuity was on full display, registering a sheer amount of patents culminating in Swiss Patent N60 360, otherwise known as the Polyplan.

Polyplan translates to multiple planes, which Movado took full advantage of while inventing the movement. While its central plate houses the movement's gear train and barrel, its 20 degree-angled upper and lower sections feature the movement's setting wheel, stem, crown and balance wheel - all of which harmoniously work in unison within a mind-bending (the latter being quite literal) construction.

Incredible.

This set up Movado's next trick - the Curviplan. In aesthetics, the Curviplan is somewhat adjacent to the Polyplan. It features a slender silhouette that curves and also features extended bridges. While the calibre remains akin to a traditional movement construction, the Curviplan features the Calibre 510 - a suitable companion to the Polyplan.

This piece features a 23mm x 42mm stainless steel case that is an absolute dream on the wrist. The silver dial is adorned with anumerals and sector layout, giving the watch a refined air that would make it look great when paired with a bespoke suit. It also flaunts a subsidiary seconds register, and occupies a lovely middle ground between field watch and dress watch. Very very cool.

If you love midcentury watchmaking, it's hard to think of a classier Movado that packs history, design, and patina into a single package.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0809/1255/files/AS10845_40992482_MOVADO_STEELRECTANGULARSECTORDIAL-5.jpg?v=1759492913
