{"title":"Heuer - Sold","description":"","products":[{"product_id":"heuer-autavia-orange-as00744","title":"Heuer Autavia Orange","description":"\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt strikes us as somewhat ironic that while Heuer is perhaps best known for introducing the Calibre 11 (through \u003cem\u003e\u003ca title=\"analog\/shift X OnTheDash Project 99 The Race To Develop The World's First Automatic Chronograph\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.onthedash.com\/docs\/Project99.html\"\u003eProject 99\u003c\/a\u003e)\u003c\/em\u003e automatic chronograph movement and inserting it in some of the most iconic 1970s timepieces ever produced, our favorites from the brand are almost always the \"lesser\" versions - powered by good old fashioned manual-winding Valjoux movements.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere's a multitude of reasons for this seemingly odd preference:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor starters, as important and impressive an innovation in timekeeping as the Calibre 11 was (and it really, really was), it simply \u003cem\u003eisn't\u003c\/em\u003e our favorite movement. The reasons for this are varied, but it ultimately comes down to two primary points. Firstly, as cool as automatic chronographs are, they are inherently \u003cem\u003eless\u003c\/em\u003e accurate than manual winding versions. Automatic movements require an additional escapement through which amplitude is lost, resulting in less accurate timekeeping than manual units. For sure, this difference is generally negligible, but it is worthy of note. Secondly, because these movements were the first of their kind, performance and reliability \u003cem\u003earen't\u003c\/em\u003e at the top of their game, whereas the Valjoux manual counterparts that preceded them were at the top of their game. Reliable, accurate, and robust as all get out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn addition to the differences in the movements, there is a significant difference in how these watches wear.  While the cushion cases used on both manual and automatic-driven Autavias in the 1970s outwardly appear the same, the difference in \u003cem\u003ethickness\u003c\/em\u003e between them is significant. Automatic movements required extra clearance, so while the length and width of the cases were uniform, the \u003cem\u003edepth\u003c\/em\u003e of the case varied considerably. Cushion cases were introduced around 1969 as the new housing for the Chronomatic movements, modernizing Heuer's look and ultimately setting the tone for sports watch design in the 1970s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile we are big fans of the look in general, we have to admit that as our tastes mature we find some of the larger automatic pieces a bit of a bear on the wrist - top heavy and just a little too big. The slimmer manual versions, on the other hand, have all the looks but are considerably slimmer, making for a better wear all around.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLastly, there's the issue of availability. We'd be lying to you if we said we weren't driven by rarity to some degree. Of course all vintage pieces inherently have a certain degree of rarity, and Heuer sports models are no exception. Jack wanted a watch that was stylish and functional, a watch that gives you everything you need and nothing you don’t.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a watch designed in the late 1960s, the Carrera remains a stunner, proving the brilliance of Jack’s design philosophy. A clean dial never goes out of style, and it makes the Carrera an easy watch to dress up or down. At 36mm, the case wears extremely well on the modern wrist, its long beveled lugs making it feel a bit beefier while still slipping easily under a cuff.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCarreras were produced in a variety of styles with a range of dials configurations, including relatively standard black and silver dials and the rarer, more sought after panda dials.  Still rare, but slightly more available and affordable than the coveted panda dials, are the black and silver dials with added tachymeter, decimal or pulsometer chapter rings in red, blue, white and black.  These rings add a wonderful touch of color to an otherwise simplistic dial, making them a particularly attractive option for the enterprising collector.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eManufactured circa 1970, this particular Carrera, a lovely Reference 3647T, is powered by the robust manually-wound Valjoux 92 chronograph movement, with double subsidiary register layout. The Valjoux 92 is a derivative of the triple register Valjoux 72 that we all know and love, with similar architecture and quality, simply without an hour register. These Valjoux 92-equipped Carreras have a cleaner look and feel especially modern today, as many brands use this layout for their new releases.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have been so blown away by the demand from our clients for these watches that we’re officially declaring 2015 the Year of the Carrera. When Heuer designed this watch, the stars were aligned and an icon was born. The Siffert went on to become a favorite of vintage watch collectors and a grail for any passionate Heuer fan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat said, if you absolutely forced us to nitpick, the only qualm we may have with the watch is that it’s a bit chunky. Don’t get us wrong, the Siffert wears extremely well, but it’s a chunky watch, and some collectors prefer to fill their watch box with svelter pieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLuckily, there’s a Siffert for everyone. While the Caliber 11 automatic model is what comes to mind when many collectors here the name, Heuer created three manual versions of the watch in the same style as the automatic model, and only produced a small number of these compared to the automatics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach version of the Siffert has its own unique merits, and we would be very happy if our personal collection consisted of one of each and no other watches. This example, the two register no date, has the cleanest dial of bunch, as well as the thinnest case. While it looks identical to the rest head-on, it’s the easiest model to slip under a cuff and most comfortable to wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eManual Sifferts rarely come up for sale, and we had to pry this model out of the hands of a private vintage collector to be able to offer it to our clients. With a case, dial and hands in excellent condition, this is a rare opportunity to own of the coolest vintage Heuers out there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eHistory\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Siffert is the real deal. During the golden age of sports car racing, a chronograph watch was an essential piece of kit, and the Siffert is the watch that was worn by many of the greats. This one, ladies and gentlemen, is the real McCoy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese were the days of Bell, Elford, McQueen. The days of Porsche 917s with no traction control. The glory days of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This was a special time in history, and Heuer chronographs were used to mark it, track it and record it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJo Siffert was a Heuer enthusiast (not to mention amateur pit-lane dealer) in the late 60s and early 70s, and also happened to be one of Formula I’s best drivers.  He taught Steve McQueen his track secrets and was the very man who introduced McQueen to the Heuer brand. When McQueen was filming Le Mans, he insisted on imitating Siffert’s uniform down to the smallest details, including the prominent Heuer patch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Monaco is the best-known Heuer chronograph to many, but for collectors like us, the Autavia is the one to own. Rolex has its Submariner, Breitling its Navitimer. Blancpain has its Fifty Fathoms and Audemars Piguet its Royal Oak. As far as we’re concerned the Siffert is Heuer’s monolith, it’s pièce de résistance. That changed when Steve McQueen strapped one on the wrist of his character Michael Delaney in the 1971 film Le Mans - and since then the watch has reached levels of popularity matched by very few other historical timepieces. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhile the \"McQueen\" variant with a blue dial may be the first version to come to mind, they were also produced in a variety of gray and silver dials in limited numbers, which are far less common finds on the market today. These versions do not command the same premiums as their blue dialed brethren, but in our eyes are every bit as alluring - perhaps even more so. Essentially, these versions are a great way to get into a proper vintage Monaco without selling a kidney! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis particular example is a Reference 1533G and features the Heuer Calibre 15, originally designed to be a \"budget version\" of the Calibre 11 movement from the late 1960s. This revised movement replaced the 12 Hour Register typically found at 9:00 with a subsidiary sweep seconds hand, letting the wearer know with a quick glance that the watch was keeping time. It also features a 30 Minute Counter at 3:00 and a date function at 6:00. With a large red central sweep chrono hand, this movement proves to be every bit as functional (we'd even argue moreso with the subsidiary seconds) than its Calibre 11 counterparts.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOverall, this is a fantastic example of one of the world's most desirable sporting chronographs that doesn't show up often, and makes one hell of a statement on the wrist. This gave rise to the so-called “Poor Man’s Heuer”, those chronographs that resembled Heuers and, in some cases, even made by Heuer for other brands. Many of those brands had names lost to history—Clebar, Aristo, Tradition—while others lived on to the present day in one form or another. One of the better known examples of a Poor Man’s Heuer is the Hamilton chronograph we’re featuring today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHamilton is a well-known brand, dating back to its 19th century American roots making pocketwatches and chronometers for the railroad and Navy, respectively. By the 1960s, Hamilton was losing ground and tried to stem its losses by purchasing the Swiss company, Buren, where it produced watches with the “Swiss Made” label on the dial.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt also outsourced the production of some of its watches, including a popular line of chronographs which were built to order by Heuer itself, resembling the latter’s Carrera, with dual contrasting “Panda” registers, a broad creamy dial and classic mushroom push-pieces. Inside ticked a hand-wound Landeron 248, a venerable movement that later morphed into the Valjoux 7733.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe watch proved successful for Hamilton and is one of our favorite Poor Man’s Heuers for reasons beyond its OEM build. It’s also eminently more affordable than a vintage Carrera of the same age. Though Hamilton lost its all-American cachet, the watches it sold in the late 1960s had a cool elegance to them. This chronograph is a perfect example. The 36-millimeter case has the clean lines of a classic ‘60s watch and a minimalist design that was a departure from the garish, angular watches it was building in the ‘50s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven the logo, with the sans-serif font and stylized “H” look right out of a “Mad Men” episode. The watch is also from the last halcyon years of the hand-wound chronograph, a species we particularly covet. Only a year or two after this watch was originally sold, Hamilton was part of a consortium of brands, including Heuer, that worked to develop the world’s first self-winding chronograph movement. We’ll still take ours hand-cranked, thank you very much.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis Hamilton chronograph comes off of a fresh service in remarkable condition, with only minimal patina to the steel case and a very clean dial, devoid of oxidation or discoloration. The chronograph function snap to attention and the watch keeps good time. We’re selling it on a ‘60s vintage leather strap along with an assortment of Crown \u0026amp;amp; Buckle nylon and leather straps for mix and match fun. This was the watch designed by Heuer for the real race car driver. If you haven't ever worn one, you are truly missing out. Pair a beefy steel case with a rotating bezel, twin subsidiary registers and a date function, and power it with the an automatic winding chronograph movement, and you have yourself a sporting timepiece for the ages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAutavias from this era were offered in a multitude of dial configurations, but the 1163 \"Siffert\" is far and away the crowd favorite.  The \"Siffert\" Autavia was named after the legendary Swiss Formula I driver Jo Siffert, who wore the iconic Panda Dial variant constantly before his death at Brands Hatch in 1971.  Siffert, who was a steadfast enthusiast (and pit-lane dealer) of Heuer in the late 60s and early 70s, is generally regarded one the of the greatest racing drivers of all time, and shared his skill on the track - and his affection for Heuer - with friend and fellow driver Steve McQueen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile Autavias are \u003cem\u003erelatively\u003c\/em\u003e plentiful on the market, finding quality examples that have been serviced and maintained properly  is becoming difficult. We are constantly on the lookout for survivors and are very pleased to present this tremendous example of the most desirable version. Last seen in the 1972 catalog, the Camaro had one of the shortest production runs of all the models from the time period, leading to their relative rarity today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a sense, the Camaro is a blend of the early manually wound Carreras and the later Monacos, featuring the square cushion case and straight lugs, evocative of a Monaco, and the same manual calibers and similar dials to Carreras. Larger than a Carrera but without the heft of a Monaco, the Camaro is as comfortable as it is stylish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe case measures 37mm, but like all square watches, the Camaro wears larger than the numbers might suggest. The manual movement lends itself to a thin case, which makes the watch quite comfortable on the wrist. The watch features a variety of case finishes, notably the signature Heuer sunburst finish on the top of the case, beveling down into a polished outer perimeter and the polished finish continuing onto the sides of the case and lugs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe’re big fans of the Camaro line in general, but this Camaro's chocolate \"tropical\" dial makes it very special. Chocolate dials began their lives as black, but because of a combination of paint formulation and environmental factors, have faded to a range of brown colors, from dark chocolate to light mocha. This dial is a lovely rich shade of brown, and transforms the watch into something much more special than a typical Camaro. The Carrera got its name (in 1963) from the legendary cross-isthmus road race in Mexico, known as \u003cem\u003eLa Carrera Panamericana.\u003c\/em\u003e At least one other noteworthy international brand also borrowed this name for one of their products (hint...it has four wheels and the engine in the back).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEarly Carreras were powered by manually-winding chronograph movements, but with the advent of the automatic chronograph in 1969 (also pioneered by Heuer), production began shifting towards automatic in a serious way. The Carrera was among the first models to be treated to an overhaul, and a bevy of different executions began flooding out of Heuer's factory, and of course the model remains an automatic chronograph to this day. if you're looking at this, you probably already know.  With that said, here's an incredibly rare example we were just tickled to uncover: a Reference 3647S signed by Gübelin!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGübelin is a major European luxury retailer and watch brand with dating back nearly 150 years.  In addition to watchmaking and retailing their own label, Gübelin also branded some of the world's most exclusive timepieces, including Patek Philippe for sale in their shops throughout Europe.  One might consider them the European equivalent of Tiffany \u0026amp; Co.  While we have come across Gübelin signed timepieces before, as well as some of their own spectacular house-brand models, we have never before seen one of these!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eManufactured circa 1965, this manually-wound Carrera features the robust Valjoux 92 chronograph movement with a 45-minute counter and subsidiary seconds register set against and an incredibly crisp and clean silver sunburst dial.  We searched all year for the appropriate timepiece to commemorate the 50-Year milestone of the world's most recognizable motorsports chronograph, and we finally found it.  This is a truly spectacular piece with great history - a very interesting steel chronograph with an integrated bracelet design akin to some of Gerald Genta's prominent successes in the mid 1970s.  With a tonneau case shape, gorgeous twin register dial layout and date function, and the tried and true Calibre 12 automatic chrono movement inside, one can only speculate why it wasn't successful at the time of its release. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhatever the case, it means good fortune for collectors today, as is evident with the example we have available here.  This NOS (New Old Stock) Daytona features a stunning blue dial and a perfectly original case - All of them are hard to find - the Monaco “Dark Lord” and the Autavia 11063 have reached unobtanium status -  but today we are offering the third: The Monza.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe love vintage Heuers because they are the epitome of vintage racing chronographs, and the Monza is great example of that history and the Heuer’s ties to Formula 1 racing. There are four characters involved in the Monza’s origin story- Jack Heuer, Nicki Lauda, Enzo Ferrari and Piero Lardi Ferrari- so right off the bat you know we’re talking about one cool watch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen Nicki Lauda joined the Ferrari’s F1 team in 1974, they had gone 11 years without a World Championship title.  But with the Austrian behind the wheel of the new 312T, Ferrari and Lauda finally brought home the title in 1975. Heuer already had a successful partnership with Ferrari (signed by Enzo Ferrari in his trademark violet ink in 1971) when Jack Heuer decided to launch a new watch, the Monza, to celebrate Lauda’s success.  It hit dealers in 1976.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Monza has several features that are unusual among Heuers. Heuer built the case in brass rather than steel, applying a PVD coating in black or chrome, and never selling the watch in the bare metal. The Monza case back bears the model name and reference number, which is also extremely unusual for Heuer, and probably done because the PVD coating would cover up engraving on the case.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother unusual feature of the Monza line is that the Caliber 15 “economy” movement was used as the standard caliber for the watch. Heuer designed the Cal. 15, a Cal. 12 with the chronograph hours counter removed, to be a lower-cost alternative to the Cal. 12, and typically put the Cal. 15 into Carreras, Monacos and Autavias that sold at a slightly lower price point. The Monza is the reverse, with only a small percentage of the watches built housing the Cal. 12, making them a rarity in today’s marketplace. We have a strong preference for the Cal. 12 version because of the rarity, but even more so because the movement lends itself to a symmetrical and more aesthetically pleasing sub-register layout.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you’ve been in the market for a Monza, we don’t have to tell you how rare it is to find one with the PVD coating in nearly perfect condition. Submariner, Breitling its Navitimer.  Blancpain has its Fifty Fathoms and Audemars Piguet its Royal Oak.  You could be forgiven for thinking that the Monaco is the icon of Heuer's line of motorsports chronographs, but we'd argue that these great 70s cushion-cased watches take that title.  This was the watch designed by Heuer for the real race car driver.  If you haven't ever worn one, you are truly missing out.  Pair a beefy steel case with a rotating bezel, twin subsidiary registers and a date function, and power it with the an automatic winding chronograph movement, and you have yourself a sporting timepiece for the ages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAutavias from this era were offered in a multitude of dial configurations, but the 1163V \"Viceroy\" is far and away our favorite.  Offered in a joint promotion with Viceroy Cigarettes, the 1163V could be had for only $88 and a proof of purchase from a carton of smokes.  If we had a time machine, we'd go on back and return with a mother lode (and probably lung cancer).  It would be worth it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile Viceroy Autavias are \u003cem\u003erelatively\u003c\/em\u003e plentiful on the market, finding good examples that have been serviced and maintained properly and haven't had their cases overly polished is becoming difficult.  We are constantly on the lookout for survivors and are very pleased to present this example, just back from a full service and ready to wear to your next track day!  Make no mistake, these killer 70s Autavias are a tremendous value, but the market is catching on, and we This was a special time in history, and Heuer chronographs were used to mark it, track it and record it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJo Siffert was a Heuer enthusiast (not to mention amateur pit-lane dealer) in the late 60s and early 70s, and also happened to be one of Formula I’s best drivers.  He taught Steve McQueen his track secrets and was the very man who introduced McQueen to the Heuer brand. When McQueen was filming Le Mans, he insisted on imitating Siffert’s uniform down to the smallest details, including the prominent Heuer patch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Monaco is the best-known Heuer chronograph to many, but for collectors like us, the Autavia is the one to own. Rolex has its Submariner, Breitling its Navitimer. Blancpain has its Fifty Fathoms and Audemars Piguet its Royal Oak. As far as we’re concerned the Siffert is Heuer’s monolith, it’s pièce de résistance. From its steel cushion case, panda dial, twin subsidiary registers and date function, to the fact that it's powered by one of the world's first automatic chronograph movements, the Siffert has it all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou’ll find a couple of Sifferts in our archives, but this is the first time that we are able to offer such an early and special execution of this great watch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKnown as the “small logo” Siffert, you’ll notice that the Heuer shield is slightly smaller than in other versions.  Additionally, you'll note that the hour indices are serrated, the hands are plain polished steel and the hour subsidiary register only shows numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12. These features are marks of the earliest regular production Siffert, the 1163T.  It is \u003cem\u003eexceedingly\u003c\/em\u003e rare, especially in this condition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is truly a remarkable watch, and a favorite of the analog\/shift team. Once overshadowed by the Carrera, the Monaco and the Autavia in the minds of collectors, the Camaro has come into it’s own recently, earning top billing in the eyes of many new and old Heuer enthusiasts, and it’s easy to see why. The Camaro is every bit as functional, beautiful and wonderfully retro as the rest of the Heuer lineup, evoking the 60s and 70s Motorsports legacy brilliantly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHeuer launched the Camaro in 1968, just one year before the introduction of the first automatic-winding movement, the Chronomatic, was fitted into the Monaco, the Autavia and the Carrera lines the following year. Last seen in the 1972 catalog, the Camaro had one of the shortest production runs of all the models from the 60s and 70s, leading to their relative rarity today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a sense, the Camaro is a blend of the early manually-wound Carreras and the later Monacos, with the combination of a square cushion case and straight lugs, evocative of a Monaco, the same manual calibers and dials similar to Carreras. Larger than a Carrera but without the heft of a Monaco, the Camaro is as comfortable as it is stylish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe love all of the Camaros (yes, even the gold-plated oddballs), but what we have here is an extremely special piece, and one that we can say with a great deal of certainty that we will never find again. Heuer sold some of their watches at some of the most prestigious European dealers in the 60s and 70s, and occasionally co-signed their dials with the dealers’ names (like the \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/www.analogshift.com\/products\/heuer-carrera-signed-by-gubelin\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eGübelin Carrera\u003c\/a\u003e). Co-singed Heuers are \u003cem\u003eextremely\u003c\/em\u003e rare today, and in our research we were not able to find another example of a silver dial Meister Camaro. If you’ve been looking to add a Camaro to your collection, this one is as good as it gets.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe case measures 37mm, but like all square watches, the Camaro wears larger than the numbers might suggest. The manual movement lends itself to a thin case, making the watch quite comfortable on the wrist. The case features a variety of finishes, notably the signature Heuer sunburst finish on the top of the case, beveling down into a polished outer perimeter and the polished finish continuing onto the sides of the case and lugs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile it's \"big brother\" (the Monaco) might have stolen the spotlight in the collector market, in our opinion you'd be hard pressed to find a legitimate vintage Motorsports chronograph with more style and charisma. The dial and hands went through a few iterations over the early years of the model, ending with what you see here, the Viceroy style 1163.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis 1163MH isn’t one of the watches that were part of the Viceroy promotion, but the stories of the two go hand in hand. Heuer had a difficult time selling chronographs wristwatches in the early 1970s, and at that time still sold vastly more stopwatches than wristwatches. At the same time that Heuer struggling to sell watches, Viceroy was struggling with its cigarette business. Viceroy had already partnered with the Parnelli Jones racing team to position their brand as the sportsman’s cigarette, and they approached Heuer, the leader in track timing, to come up chronograph promotion. Heuer produced a special version of the 1163, the 1163V for the deal, and together with Viceroy, offered the watch for $88 when someone mailed in the end flap of a Viceroy cigarette carton.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, what exactly is the difference between a Viceroy and 1163MH?  The main difference is that the Viceroy has the reference number \"1163V\" engraved between the lugs, instead of just \"1163\".  The 1163MH is a reference 1163 Autavia, and the MH denotes the type of bezel insert (minute\/hour).  There is also a 1163T, which is a reference 1163 with a tachymeter bezel.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 1163MH and 1163T were sold in authorized dealers for $200 during the time period of the Viceroy promotion, coming in with black or white dials (the white dial is what collectors call the Siffert today). The Viceroy promotion let people buy a virtually identical copy of a $200 watch for less than half the price, and Heuer sold Viceroys in droves. Today the 1163V is the most commonly seen vintage Autavia by a large margin, making the 1163MH the more interesting black dialed Autavia to collectors. Let’s put it this way, the 1163V would be the Rolex 5513 and the 1163MH the 5512. They’re all great watches, but the 1163MH\/5512 has just a little something extra.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Viceroy watches were almost always sold with tachymeter bezels, while the 1163s sold by dealers were offered with a minute\/hour bezel (MH) in addition to the tachymeter option. The MH bezel is the rarer of the two, and more highly valued today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis 1163MH checks all the boxes. It’s a dealer model, it has an MH bezel and it’s in fantastic overall condition. This watch offer a tremendous value proposition compared to other vintage Heuers, especially compared to the Siffert, which is the same watch just in different colors. The tide is caused by the gravitation pull of the moon, which makes one orbit around the Earth every 28 days. The Earth rotates about its axis once every 24 hours, so with these facts, some algebra and a calculator, you can figure out that the time of high tide moves by 51.5 minutes each day. The inner bezel displays 14 days, and some more math tells us that the spacing between each day is 51.43 minutes between each dash (close enough!). Once it’s high tide, simply line up the day of the week on the inner bezel and high tide mark on the outer bezel with the hour hand, and the watch will display the time of high tide and low tide each day for the next two weeks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReminiscent of another vintage Heuer, the Calculator, the Soluar features a 45mm cushion and large outer bezel, though its low profile keeps it light and comfortable. The blue dial hints at its ties to the water, and the dual crowns bear a classic sporty look. The Solunar definitely has a unique look, but we’re suckers for these oddball watches built with a real purpose in mind. The watch is a good reminder of Heuer’s history as a tool watch company, building watches for a wide variety of professionals instead of mere horological jewelry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Solunar is quite the rare bird, especially in mint condition. Since it was built for sailors and fisherman, most were used as tools and put through hard use.  We were lucky to source one that spent most of its life safely tucked away in a drawer. The 40mm case is thin for its size, and the downwardly angled lugs hug the wrist, making this one hell of a comfortable watch. The inverse panda dial is probably the most popular chronograph colorway, and if there’s one thing Heuer knows, it’s how to make a beautiful dial. While well known for their ties to Motorsports through the Monaco, Autavia and Carrera models lines, Heuer also built watches designed for use by sailors, aviators, divers and fishermen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Skipper may appear to be a wild amalgam of color that was just an attempt at designing a watch that sticks out in a crowd, but like all of the Heuer greats, it’s a purpose-built machine. While the blue dial was chosen because of the watch's close ties to water, the contrasting orange hour and minute hands were chosen to increase legibility at a glance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red, white and blue sub-dial is a classic timer feature, with each segment marking a period in the lead up to a regatta. In the 15 minutes leading up to a race, the boat skippers must gather behind the starting line at the first signal, vying with each other for the best position. The color-coding makes the chronograph easy for the skippers to read, letting them know how long until they can cross the start line, thus allowing them to plan the best course and eek out every bit of advantage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHeuer never built a unique case for the Skippers, and it evolved alongside the other model lines during its run. The first Skipper was housed in a Carrera case (the über-rare “Skippererra”), though it quickly found its way into an Autavia case and stayed there for each future iteration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis example of the Skipper, the reference 15640, features the popular Autavia cushion case and a modified Caliber 15 automatic movement. Ultimately, out of the competition greatness grew. Zenith, the renowned Swiss manufacture, would release its famed El Primero movement that found its way into many watches, including the Rolex Daytona. Seiko, the incredibly innovative Japanese powerhouse, produced their 6139 movement that would later become the first automatic chronograph in space. Popular with racers and enthusiasts alike from its launch, the watch reached mythical status on the wrist of every guy's secret man-crush, Steve McQueen, who selected it as part of the attire of his character Michael Delaney in the 1972 racing film, Le Mans. (Side Note: if you haven't seen this film, make it your number one priority in life!). The case has also fared well over the years, and retains its original finish and sharp lines. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf course Monacos look fantastic on leather straps, but there’s no denying how cool they look on a vintage bracelet. Heuer used the Swiss company Novavit to supply Monaco bracelets and endlinks, and while some were signed by Heuer and some by Novavit (like this on), they’re all identical and equally awesome.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday the Heuer market is on fire, with collectors going crazy for Autavias, Carreras on Camaros, but the original Heuer heavyweight was the Monaco 1133B. During the golden age of sports car racing, a chronograph watch was an essential piece of kit, and the Autavia is the watch that was worn by many of the greats. This one, ladies and gentlemen, is the real McCoy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese were the days of Bell, Elford, McQueen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe days of Porsche 917s with no traction control.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe glory days of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was a special time in history, and Heuer chronographs were used to mark it, track it and record it. The Monaco is probably the best-known Heuer chronograph of the era, but for collectors like us, the Autavia is the one to own. Rolex has its Submariner, Breitling its Navitimer. Blancpain has its Fifty Fathoms and Audemars Piguet its Royal Oak. As far as we’re concerned, the Autavia is Heuer’s monolith, it’s pièce de résistance. The name \"Autavia\" comes from a combination of two words: Automotive \u0026amp; Aviation. The first Autavias were dashboard clocks and instrumentation used in automobiles and aircraft, and Heuer recycled the name and applied to their line of professional racing wrist chronographs.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe earliest Autavias were introduced in the mid 1960s and housed manually-wound chronograph movements, featuring a variety of dial and bezel configurations that have lately become incredibly desirable on the collector market.  In 1969, these early manual-winders made way for the world's first automatic chronograph movement, the now-famous Calibre 11. The Autavia was one of the first models to receive the new Calibre 11 movements, and a new cushion case design was introduced simultaneously, heralding the change into a new era of design - the 1970s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou’ll find more than a few cushion-case Autavias of varying executions in our archives, but this is the first time that we've been able to offer the rare Reference 73663.  This relatively obscure reference combined the best of the old; a robust, manual-winding Valjoux chronograph movement, with the best of the new; Heuer's brilliant new cushion case design and outstanding \"Beads Of Rice\" bracelent by Gay Freres. Although most of the Autavias manufactured after 1969 housed the new Calibre 11 automatic movements, there were a relatively small number produced with manual winding mechanisms.  This was done for a number of reasons, ranging from the need to offer a \"budget\" range Autavia for certain markets to specifications for military-issue timepieces which required higher degrees of reliability and accuracy that had not yet been proven with their automatic Calibre 11. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUltimately, these cushion case manual-winders are fairly uncommon on the market, making them all the more interesting and desirable as far as we're concerned!  This particular example, fitted with a reverse-panda dial and the red accents commonly associated with the \"Viceroy\" Autavias, retains its original minutes\/hours bezel and bracelet.  After a full mechanical restoration, this beauty is now ready to find a new home - hopefully on the wrist of someone who will appreciate its rarity and story as much as its value - oh, and of course the fact that it has arguably \u003cem\u003emore\u003c\/em\u003e legit racing heritage than that \u003cem\u003eother\u003c\/em\u003e well-known panda dial Valjoux-powered chronograph popular with collectors!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e This is truly a remarkable watch and a favorite of the analog\/shift team. They created some of the coolest tool watches of the mid-20th century, and had a solution for everyone, from sports car racers to SCUBA divers to engineers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Heuer Reference 510.502 was one of the last models to come out of Heuer before the company was purchased by Technique Avant Garde (TAG). Created alongside similar watches made for military use and commissioned by the Italian Air Force, the 510.502 is built around the Lemania 5100 automatic chronograph movement, which has itself become an object of collector’s desires, no matter what it’s cased in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe movement was designed to be a robust, hardwearing chrono for professional and military applications, and is somewhat unique in its operation, featuring a central chrono minute rather than the typical sub-register, allowing for easier reading of the elapsed time. The 24-hour indicator at 12 o’clock is part of what makes the watch useful for the military, and the olive drab PVD further contributes to the overall style.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe case is reminiscent of other hooded-lug barrel cases from the 70s, and completes the overall tool watch look. Once overshadowed by the Carrera, the Monaco and the Autavia in the minds of collectors, the Camaro has come into it’s own recently, earning top billing in the eyes of many new and old Heuer enthusiasts, and it’s easy to see why. The Camaro is every bit as functional, beautiful and wonderfully retro as the rest of the Heuer lineup, evoking the 60s and 70s Motorsports legacy brilliantly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHeuer launched the Camaro in 1968, just one year before the introduction of the first automatic-winding movement, the Chronomatic, was fitted into the Monaco, the Autavia and the Carrera lines the following year. Last seen in the 1972 catalog, the Camaro had one of the shortest production runs of all the models from the 60s and 70s, leading to their relative rarity today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a sense, the Camaro is a blend of the early manually-wound Carreras and the later Monacos, with the combination of a square cushion case and straight lugs, evocative of a Monaco, the same manual calibers and dials similar to Carreras. Larger than a Carrera but without the heft of a Monaco, the Camaro is as comfortable as it is stylish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Camaro case measures 37mm, but like all square watches, the Camaro wears larger than the numbers might suggest. The manual movement lends itself to a thin case, making the watch quite comfortable on the wrist. The case features a variety of finishes, notably the signature Heuer sunburst finish on the top of the case, beveling down into a polished outer perimeter and the polished finish continuing onto the sides of the case and lugs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular example, a Reference 73345T, features a gold plated case popular in the early 1970s, as well as a silver sunburst dial with gold markers and outer Tachymeter track.  With gold hands, fluted pushers, and a signed crown, this Camaro makes for a great wrist presence, combining a signature Heuer chronograph look with just a little bit of bling! Unlike other examples on the market, the original gold plating on this one hasn't degraded significantly, and has plenty of life ahead of it, and it pairs well with a variety of straps, either of the Rallye-style perforated variety, or a dressier option as pictured here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile it's \"big brother\" (the Monaco) might have stolen the spotlight in the collector market, in our opinion you'd be hard pressed to find a legitimate vintage Motorsports chronograph with more style and charisma. Following a few years later, Heuer introduced a GMT model to the range, adding a third large hand displaying a second time zone and two-tone rotating bezel alongside a two-register chronograph with date function.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs you are probably aware by now, values for early Heuer chronographs are on the rise, and unmolested, original examples are getting hard to come by.  This particular example is as honest as they come, showing patina we've never seen before on an Autavia GMT. Most notably, the original bezel has worn down to bare metal - the kind that makes vintage collectors go weak in the knees!  As sticklers for authenticity, we have decided to offer the watch with this bezel, but have sourced a genuine replacement bezel (currently installed) showing the classic red and blue 'Pepsi' coloration with a delightful fade of its own. A clean dial never goes out of style, and it makes the Carrera an easy watch to dress up or down. The top-secret work conducted at the hands of world-class engineers was dubbed Project 99.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere were three watch groups racing to be the first to release an automatic chronograph in the late 1960s; Zenith, Seiko and the joint Project 99 venture. Ultimately, out of the competition greatness grew. Zenith, the renowned Swiss manufacture, would release its famed El Primero movement that found its way into many watches, including the Rolex Daytona. Seiko, the incredibly innovative Japanese powerhouse, produced their 6139 movement that would later become the first automatic chronograph in space. While the \"winner\" of this unofficial contest changes depending on who you ask, under the direction of Heuer, Project 99 created some of the era's best looking watches: the Monaco, the Autavia and
