Why We Love it

The Nautilus is without question one of the great horological icons of the 1970s, and has in recent years once again become one of the most in-demand timepiece models on the planet.

Collectors and prospectors alike are clamoring to get their hands on Genta's second great luxury sports watch, and with the recent news of the discontinuation of their current-collection steel, time-and-date model — the legendary Reference 5711 — this dramatic rise shows no signs of slowing down.

Interestingly, most demand for Nautilus models is centered around non-complicated models, something we can't fully wrap our heads around...

This particular Nautilus, a Reference 5726/1A-010 from circa the 2010s, is a great example of an oft-overlooked model. It features a 40.5mm stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal, a signed crown, a brushed bezel with polished bevels, and a white 'teak' dial with applied luminous indices and a matching handset, day, date and month windows, and a combination moon phase and AM/PM indicator above 6:00. Powered by Patek Philippe's automatic winding Calibre 324 S QA LU 24H movement, it’s fitted to a matching, integrated steel bracelet with a hidden deployant clasp.

The Nautilus — in any of its variations — is a very special thing.

This one, however, is simply beyond.

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
